Bariloche, deep lakes and Andean forest

Plan a trip with Lake District

Around San Carlos de Bariloche, the Andes break up into a maze of deep glacial lakes and forested peninsulas. The town sits on the shore of Lago Nahuel Huapi inside Argentina’s first national park: Alpine-style stone and timber, chocolate shops, and mountains straight out of the back door.

View through trees over the turquoise bay of Lake Nahuel Huapi at Villa La Angostura, with forested shores and mountains behind.

Summer is for walking, kayaking and boat trips to the islands; winter is for skiing on Cerro Catedral. North of Bariloche, the Route of the Seven Lakes runs to San Martín de los Andes past one lake after another.
